Secondary cataract

Secondary cataract is not a "recurrence" of the cataract: it is clouding of the thin capsule holding the implant, months or years after cataract surgery. Common and benign, it is treated very simply.

The signs

Vision clouding again, glare and halos, as with the original cataract — but on an already-operated eye. The implant itself stays perfectly clear.

YAG laser treatment

A YAG laser session performed at the practice, in a few minutes, painless and without injection: the laser opens the clouded capsule to clear the visual axis. Vision recovers within hours to a few days.

After the laser

No downtime: immediate return to activities. The treatment is definitive — the capsule does not cloud over again.

Frequently asked questions

Has my cataract come back?
No: the removed lens does not grow back. It is the capsule that held the implant that has clouded. The term "secondary cataract" is misleading but well established.
Is the treatment covered?
Yes, YAG laser capsulotomy is a listed procedure, covered by French health insurance.
