Dry eye

Dry eye is one of the most frequent reasons for consulting an ophthalmologist. It results from insufficient tear production or, most often, excessive evaporation due to dysfunction of the eyelids' Meibomian glands.

Symptoms

Stinging, burning, a gritty feeling, redness, vision fluctuating with blinking, discomfort worsened by screens — and sometimes, paradoxically, reflex tearing.

Contributing factors

Age, prolonged screen work (reduced blinking), contact lens wear, certain medications, dry or air-conditioned environments, associated blepharitis and rosacea, autoimmune diseases (Sjögren's syndrome).

Treatment

Preservative-free artificial tears first line, combined with daily eyelid hygiene (warmth, massage) when the Meibomian glands are involved. Severe forms require specialist treatments (topical anti-inflammatories, punctal plugs). For resistant Meibomian gland dysfunction, IPL (intense pulsed light) treatment is offered at the Ophtalife practice in Boulogne-Billancourt.
