Eyelid tumours

The eyelids can be the site of tumour growth. Any new eyelid lump warrants an eye examination to establish a precise diagnosis. In most cases these are benign eyelid tumours (hidrocystoma, xanthelasma, molluscum, chalazion…). More rarely they are malignant. Basal cell carcinoma is the most frequent malignant tumour (90% of cases).

The procedure

The procedure depends on the tumour type. For benign tumours requiring surgery, excision without margins is sufficient. Malignant tumours require excision with safety margins, sometimes combined with surgical reconstruction depending on the tissue loss (graft or flap).

Recovery

Recovery depends on the procedure performed, with many possible courses depending on the tumour's nature, location, extent and the type of reconstruction.
