Evisceration

Evisceration surgically removes the contents of the eyeball while preserving its envelope: the sclera (the “white of the eye”) and the muscles that move the eye. The contents are replaced by an implant that restores the eye's volume and allows fitting of a custom-made ocular prosthesis matching the other eye. A prior specialist consultation establishes the indication and assesses globe volume and eyelid position.

Frequently asked questions

When is evisceration proposed?
It may be indicated for phthisis bulbi with pain or aesthetic concern. Phthisis bulbi is the chronic outcome of a blind eye, which atrophies and becomes painful. It can follow trauma, severe eye infection or previous surgery.
What type of anaesthesia is used?
Evisceration is performed under general anaesthesia, as day surgery.
What is the recovery like?
Eyelid swelling and pain are possible in the days following surgery. A transparent plastic shell (conformer) is placed under the eyelids and removed one month after the procedure.
When is the prosthesis fitted?
The prosthesis is fitted after the conformer is removed. It is created by an ocularist who makes a custom prosthesis after moulding the cavity. A temporary prosthesis is provided while awaiting the final one.
What are the possible complications?
Post-operative complications are rare: bleeding, infection, suture dehiscence or implant extrusion. In the long term, follow-up checks for conjunctival dehiscence with implant exposure, eyelid drooping (ptosis) or eyelid malposition. Some of these complications may require further surgery.
