Corneal diseases

The cornea is the transparent “window” at the front of the eye: any change in its transparency or shape directly affects vision. A red, painful eye with light sensitivity often points to the cornea, and warrants prompt examination.

Keratitis

Inflammation or infection of the cornea: pain, photophobia, tearing, reduced vision. Contact lens wear is the main risk factor for infection — this is an ophthalmic emergency.

Keratoconus

A progressive deformation of the cornea, which thins and takes on a cone shape, usually starting in adolescence. To consider in the face of progressive astigmatism. A treatment (cross-linking) can slow its progression, hence the value of early diagnosis. Repeated eye rubbing must be avoided.

The ocular surface

The cornea also suffers from surface diseases: dry eye, blepharitis, conjunctivitis and stye each have a dedicated page.

Frequently asked questions

What precautions with contact lenses?
Strict hand hygiene, respect of wearing time and replacement schedule, never tap water on the lenses and never sleep in them (except specifically fitted lenses). Any painful red eye in a lens wearer requires stopping lens wear and a prompt consultation.
