Ptosis (droopy eyelid)

Ptosis refers to a drooping upper eyelid. When troublesome (loss of the upper visual field, aesthetic concern), it can be treated surgically. Surgery aims to restore the upper eyelid's function and natural appearance. In the case shown, the ptosis was due to age-related disinsertion of the levator muscle (aponeurotic ptosis), the most frequent cause.

The procedure

The procedure is performed as day surgery under local anaesthesia and takes about thirty minutes. A small incision along the natural upper eyelid crease allows reinsertion of the levator muscle, adjusted to the severity of the ptosis. A blepharoplasty can be combined with this procedure. Recovery is straightforward in most cases.

Scar and recovery

The scar is discreet, located in the natural crease of the upper eyelid. Stitches are removed between the 5th and 7th day after surgery.
