The SLT laser (Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty) is a treatment for open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. Performed at the practice in a few minutes, it lowers intraocular pressure by stimulating the eye's natural drainage system — with no incision and no hospital stay.
The principle
Aqueous humour leaves the eye through a filter located in the iridocorneal angle: the trabecular meshwork. The SLT laser delivers very short pulses that selectively target the pigmented cells of this filter, without damaging neighbouring tissue. The biological reaction induced improves aqueous drainage, and the pressure falls progressively over a few weeks.
Indications
Open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. SLT can be offered as a first-line treatment (an alternative to drops), as a complement when pressure remains insufficiently controlled, or in case of intolerance to eye drops. It can delay, or even avoid, glaucoma surgery.
The session step by step
The session takes place at the practice. After anaesthetic drops are instilled, a contact lens is placed on the eye to guide the laser. The treatment takes a few minutes per eye; it is painless — at most a slight tingling. You leave immediately and can resume your activities the same day.
Follow-up and effectiveness
Mild transient inflammation is possible in the first days. The intraocular pressure is checked a few weeks after the session to assess effectiveness, which is achieved in the majority of cases. The effect can wear off over the years: the procedure can then be repeated.

Frequently asked questions
Is the SLT laser painful?
No: the session is performed under drop anaesthesia and most patients feel only a slight tingling. No time off is needed.
Can I stop my eye drops after SLT?
That is sometimes the goal, but the decision is made case by case, depending on the pressure achieved at follow-up checks. Never stop an eye drop without your ophthalmologist's advice.
How long does the effect last?
The effect lasts several years in the majority of patients, then may gradually wear off. The session can then be repeated.
Is the SLT laser reimbursed?
The SLT laser is partially covered by the French health insurance system; the out-of-pocket cost is shown on the fees and reimbursement page.
