As glaucoma progresses without symptoms for years, only regular screening can detect it in time — before any irreversible vision loss. It relies on a simple, painless examination.
The screening tests
Measurement of intraocular pressure (tonometry), examination of the optic nerve at the fundus and by OCT (nerve-fibre imaging), and a visual field to look for early loss.
Who should be screened?
A check is recommended from age 40, earlier and more often with a family history of glaucoma, high myopia, African or Caribbean descent, or risk factors.
How often?
Without risk factors, a check every 2 to 3 years after 40; more frequent with risk or suspicion, as advised by Dr Prud'homme.
Frequently asked questions
Is screening painful?
No: the tests are painless and quick. Pressure measurement, OCT and the visual field are done at the consultation.
