Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis is inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin membrane covering the white of the eye and the inside of the eyelids. It is the most frequent cause of a red eye. Three main causes are distinguished, and treatment depends on them.

Viral

The most frequent and highly contagious: a red, watery eye, often bilateral within days, in the context of a cold. Treatment: saline rinses and strict hand hygiene; spontaneous recovery in 1 to 2 weeks.

Bacterial

Purulent (yellowish) discharge, eyelids stuck together on waking. An antibiotic eye drop may be prescribed after examination.

Allergic

Itching is the main feature, bilateral involvement, often seasonal (pollens) or related to dust mites. Treatment: allergen avoidance, antihistamine eye drops, eye rinses.

Frequently asked questions

When to seek advice quickly?
In case of marked eye pain, reduced vision, photophobia (light sensitivity), contact lens wear, or if symptoms persist despite treatment: these signs are not those of simple conjunctivitis and require an eye examination.
