IPL and dry eye: what can you expect?

Intense pulsed light (IPL) has changed the management of evaporative dry eye: it is one of the few treatments that targets the cause — meibomian gland dysfunction — and not just the symptoms.

How does it work?

Calibrated light flashes, applied to the skin of the lower eyelids and cheekbones, stimulate the meibomian glands and reduce local inflammation as well as the telangiectasias that sustain it. The result: a more stable tear film that evaporates more slowly. IPL is also useful in blepharitis and ocular rosacea.

How the sessions unfold

Sessions take place at the Ophtalife practice in Boulogne-Billancourt, equipped with the C.STIM® device. A session is quick and painless (a feeling of warmth), with no social downtime. The protocol usually involves several sessions a few weeks apart, defined at the consultation according to severity.

What results can you expect?

Improvement is progressive, usually felt after the second or third session: less stinging, fewer visual fluctuations, better comfort at screens. IPL does not permanently "cure" dryness — maintenance sessions may be offered — and it remains complementary to eyelid hygiene and artificial tears.

Who is it for?

The treatment is intended for evaporative dry eye (meibomian dysfunction) and blepharitis resistant to usual care. The consultation examination checks the indication and the absence of contraindications (skin phototype, skin lesions…).
