This involuntary eyelid flutter — myokymia — is extremely common. Rest assured: it is benign in the vast majority of cases.
Why does the eyelid twitch?
Myokymia is a spontaneous contraction of part of the eyelid muscle, favoured by fatigue, lack of sleep, stress, excess caffeine and prolonged screen time. It affects one side only, lasts from a few seconds to a few minutes, and can recur for several days.
What can you do?
Sleep more, cut down on coffee and energy drinks, take screen breaks: in the vast majority of cases, myokymia disappears on its own within a few days to a few weeks. Magnesium is often suggested, with inconsistent benefit.
When to consult?
If the twitching persists for several weeks without respite, if it spreads to other facial muscles, if both eyes close forcibly — suggesting blepharospasm — or if it comes with facial weakness (facial palsy): a consultation is warranted.
